What was it like playing for the first time to an audience?
The audiences were so odd. Subscription audiences can be so odd. And
they were quiet sometimes. You could hear a pin drop. You'd go out
there and be doing what you thought was a wonderful job , you'd be
cooking on stage because the material is what it is, and nothing. And
then the next night standing ovation. So it was weird.
We were very fortunate because Jim Clough
(their spelling) who had an iron voice, when Boyd got sick,
Jim was there. His voice was so astounding and you heard
the score. And that's what people were coming to hear. But what was so
nice was that in this production George really felt that his book was
being heard as well. That made us all feel really good.
